MacArthur: “Big House” Should Have Won Song of The Year At The 1996 Dove Awards

Wow.

Maybe you are like me.

There are days that I can barely peel myself out of bed because of the difficulties and struggles that stand in my way as Under-shepherd of Grace Community Church. Marriages to council, children’s ministries to pray for, Deacons to oversee — sleepless nights and exhausted emotions plague my every-waking hour.

Yes, many questions pop in my mind, too. How will this end? Who will carry me when I am desperately in need? What will become of our church when I am gone? I am a human you know, patiently waiting for the return of my Savior to rescue me from this sin-cursed planet.

But one question baffles me more than the rest: Why didn’t Big House by Audio Adrenaline win “Song of the Year” at the 1996 Dove Awards? I think they got robbed and so should you. Jesus Freak was good, yes. I love the rap/melody mix in my music, just like the rest of you. Big House, though, was something special. It had a groove. It changed the way we thought about Christian music forever.

Jesus Freak was great. Big House was transcendent. Read those lyrics. Tranformational!

Even their music video was perfect. They rode around in a taxi cab with a really fat guy (probably named Thad), ate food, and threw a football around.
I have few regrets in life, but there’s one that I will never live down: I stood by and let DC Talk win “Song of the Year” in 1996. We’re all responsible for refusing to stand for justice that fateful night.
May this never happen again.
